DSS databaseThe DSS database may be a small database residing on a PC or a massive data warehouse and milk. The DSS database is a collection of current or historical datafrom a number of applicationsor groups. It may be a small database residing on a PC that contains a subset of corporate data that has been downloaded and possiblycombined with external data.Alternatively, the DSS database may be a massive data warehouse that is continuously updated by major corporate TPS (including enterprise systems anddata generated by Web site transactions). The data in DSS databases are generallyextracts or copies of production databasesso that using the DSS does not interferewith critical operational systems.10.3. DSS softwareThe DSS software system containsthe software toolsthat are used for data analysis.It may containvarious OLAP tools, data-mining tools, or a collection ofmathematical and analytical models thateasily can be made accessible to the DSSuser. A model is an abstract representation that illustratesthe components orrelationships of a phenomenon. A model can be a physical model (such as amodel airplane), a mathematical model (such as an equation), or a verbalmodel (such as adescription of a procedure for writing an order). Eachdecision-support system is built for aspecific set of purposes and makes differentcollections of models available depending on thosepurposes. A model predicts theoutput in the basis of different inputs or different conditions orfinds out the combination of conditions and input that is required to produce the desired output.Perhaps the most common models are libraries of statistical models. Such librariesusually containthe full range of expected statistical functions, including means,
