Information Systems Are More than Computers. Using information systems effectively requires an understanding of the organization, people, and information technology shaping the systems. A fourth important dimension to information systems is the financial dimension. An information system provides a solution to important business problems or challenges facing the firm. Organizational dimension: This dimension is concerned with the coordination of work through structured hierarchy and business processes. The definition of this latter is: a related tasks and behaviors for accomplishing work. These may be informal or maybe formal rules in an organization. Business processes include fulfilling an order, hiring an employee, registering a student in a program and more. Culture is embedded in information systems. You generally implement an information system to realize an objective reflecting your culture. Such an objective may be delighting a customer and placing service to customer first. An information system should enable a company to do so. People dimension: Information systems require skilled people to build, maintain, and use them. Employee attitudes affect ability to use systems productively. They may adopt them easily or maybe with difficulty. Managers are part of the human dimension. They perceive business challenges, set organizational strategy, allocate human and financial resources, and decide on products and services. Their decisions greatly influence information systems. Technology dimension: IT Infrastructure is the foundation or platform that information systems are built on. It includes computer hardware, computer software, data management technology, networking and telecommunications technology which includes internet and web, extranets, intranets.
