It has been possible to classify the ports into three generations according to three criteria. The first criterion: Port development trends and policies. The second criterion: The scope of the port's activities, especially in the field of information exchange. The third criterion: the integration and organization of the various activities of the port.(1) First generation ports (traditional ports) These are the ports that were established before the advent of containers in the sixties of the last century. Its role is limited to trading incoming and outgoing goods only, without any other activities. These ports are characterized by the following:- The port is just a common gathering site for goods where the means of sea and land transport converge and where the mode of transport is changed.The role of the port is limited to the operations of loading, unloading and storing goods.Separation of transport and trade activities.- The relationship between the port and users has a superficial relationship.Most of the investments are focused on the infrastructure of the sidewalks.Labor intensive and semi-typical trading equipment.The information systems used are local and are only suitable for use inside the port only.The added value of the port is low.(2) Second generation ports (industrial ports) These are the ports that appeared in the sixties of the last century after the emergence of containers and specialized container ships, where the role of ports expanded and deepened and took a new dimension as a center for transport and commercial and service industries.
